Partner Profiles
TFD Dunhams are Chartered Accountants and Registered Auditors. We operate from premises ideally situated on Warwick Road, not far from Manchester City Centre and Trafford Park and near to both the Manchester United and Lancashire County Cricket Club grounds. Ample car parking space is available.
The current practice has been established for over fifty years and has three partners and an associate.
For many years we have visited clients who have special needs either at home or at their place of work. If this applies to you, please let us know before arranging to visit our offices as we would then make alternative arrangements to meet you to discuss your requirements
Special Expertise
The practice seeks to work together with clients and present solutions and recommendations for improvements to their business operations. Extensive use is made of office produced programmes to assist clients in planning for the future. These include:
- “What if” programme that shows the financial effect of different decisions
- Tax program comparing tax liabilities for limited companies and unincorporated businesses
Many of the staff are particularly experienced in specialist areas such as corporate and personal taxation and financial services including the following :
- Company buy back of shares
- Company reorganisation
- VAT on property
- VAT clearance on bakery products
International connection
We are a member of Morison International, a worldwide grouping of independent firms similar to ourselves. Through this membership we are able to obtain for our clients relevant and accurate information regarding overseas trading markets, and legislation relevant thereto.
Client Base
The practice has in excess of five hundred clients operating in all sectors of industry and commerce, including sole traders, partnerships, family controlled limited companies, registered charities and various sporting and social clubs. The ability to understand clients’ needs and address these with a combination of expertise and a friendly approach are the hallmarks of a successful practice. We believe that at TFD Dunhams we can confidently claim to provide such a service.

All services relevant to owner controlled businesses are available from personnel within the practice including the following :
- Audit and accountancy
- Corporate and personal taxation
- VAT on property
- Reducing VAT liabilities for bakeries
- The use of Trusts and Inheritance Tax planning is of particular importance in succession considerations.
- Consultancy services, including company secretarial matters relevant to the formation and continuance of business activities and in relation to business restructuring.
Fixed Price Agreements for compliance services are becoming more popular with clients especially as fees are agreed at the beginning of the year, are payable in monthly instalments and also include telephone consultancy where the client does not "hear the clock ticking"

Partner Profiles
Michael Dunham - Chairman
Having qualified in 1957, Michael represented independent accountancy practices in the Greater Manchester area for many years as a member of the General Practitioner Panel at the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW). He holds several non-executive directorships and is the President of Manchester Building Society having been Chairman for many years. These appointments provide a useful overview of current commercial activity in the region.
Michael is married with two grown up children and is the son of Thomas F Dunham, the original founder of the practice.
A keen ex-sportsman, he played lacrosse at a senior level for many years followed by being actively involved in promoting the game.

Ross Barton - Senior Partner
Having qualified in 1970, Ross now specialises in Value Added Tax and has achieved notable success in securing repayments of VAT for certain sectors of the client base including bakeries where there are particular opportunities for reducing VAT costs. He is also the Partner with specific responsibility for the development of computerised facilities, both within the practice and on behalf of clients. He has recently overseen the upgrade of various Windows based packages across the office network.
Ross is a member of the Recruitment and Liaison Committee of the Manchester Society of Chartered Accountants and is the Chairman of the firms Education and Training Committee.
Ross is married with two grown up children. He is a keen table tennis and crown green bowls player.

Paul O’Brien – Taxation and Financial Services Partner
Paul is married with two children. He trained with Ernst & Young, in their Liverpool office, and qualified as a Chartered Accountant in 1988. After a brief spell working in Australia, he returned to the UK and joined an independent practice of Chartered Accountants. Paul qualified as a Member of the Chartered Institute of Taxation in 1992 and is also an Associate of the Personal Finance Society.
Paul has a wealth of practical experience and specialises in providing tax planning and financial advice to both owner-managed businesses and personal clients. He also has particular expertise in both pensions and investment matters. Because of his background, Paul has been appointed to lead the Taxation and Financial Services departments of the practice.

Andrew Edwards – Associate
Married with two children, Andrew has a wealth of experience working within the practice for over 20 years dealing specifically with owner managed businesses.
He joined TFD Dunhams in 1988 as an audit semi senior and has progressed through the practice to become an Associate. As a result of being involved at all levels he has an insight into the detailed mechanics of everyday problems and how to efficiently resolve them.
Andrew, who is a qualified Chartered Certified Accountant, provides the necessary link between the partners and clients so that they receive hands on quality support whilst the business develops.
He is a keen sportsman, who will generally be found at the Reebok Stadium during the football season.
